Diesel Fuel Storage Tank Painting in Waterloo, IA

Because of our work in the field of industrial and commercial painting, we get to see quite a variety of jobs. Each carries its own set of challenges, sometimes due to the nature of the job, the location, or special circumstances that might pop up. It keeps things interesting!

We were asked to paint three diesel fuel tanks for CN Railroad; one in Waterloo, IA, and the other two in Woodcrest and Champaign, IL. As you might guess because of what these tanks hold, you can’t quite approach a project like this in the same way that you would tackle painting your garden shed. There are a lot of special regulations that go along with this kind of industrial painting, but because of our years of experience we are well-versed in them and were ready to go. As an added element, because the tanks were by the railroad, we also had to purchase a specialized insurance.

The sides of the tanks were not in terrible condition. We were able to blast them with our 6000 PSI power washing unit to remove the loose debris and contaminants that could get in the way of perfect adhesion for the coatings to come. Remember, we also had to do this all in a way that met very particular specifications.

The tops of the tanks were in extremely rough shape. Rather than use our power washer, we had to sandblast them down to clear, clean metal before we could apply the right coatings.

As a final touch to really bring these tanks back to life, we applied new logos and lettering. There was vertical piping that ran down the tanks that we had to work around, but thanks to our experienced crew it posed no real issues in the long-run. We were able to make it look great!

Our work passed their 6-hour inspection, and they were left with tanks that are ready to face the elements once again. In fact, we were just contacted by another CN Railroad location in Louisiana that had heard such good things about our work that they would like us to paint two of their tanks this fall. That’s the kind of reputation we work hard for!
