A large construction material manufacturing company in Illinois had 6 silos that were beginning to show rust around the bases and the exterior paint was chalking badly.  We also had to repair & coat the inside bottom portion of the silos requiring confined space certification.

Main Scope & Process

1. Power wash all areas to be coated with a 6,000 psi power washer to SSPC-SP-1 standards. Remove all visible oil, grease, soil, loose rust, weld spatter and other soluble contaminants.

2. Power tool clean, SSPC-SP-3, as needed to remove pack rust.

3. Apply prime coat of Two Part Epoxy at 5-6 mils DFT.

4. Apply top coat of Two Part Urethane at 3 mils DFT.

5. Mask and tarp all items not to be painted.

6. Technical data sheets and SDS sheets provided for all products.

7. Coatings only applied in proper weather conditions.

8. Crew followed all safety rules at all times. Hard hats, safety glasses and steel toe work boots required at all times. Safety harnesses worn in lift. All Aerial Lift Operators are certified.

9. All painting done in a neat and workman like manner. Work site cleaned up on a daily basis.

10. Remove failing chime seal on bottom of tanks inside and out of all tanks. Replace with polyurethane sealant. Apply above system to lower 1' of interior of silo.

Results

• All surface preparation was in accordance with the SSPC specifications allowing us to provide coating manufacturers suggested warranty.
• Silos are now protected against deterioration due to the corrosive wind, rain, & seasonality typical in Illinois.
