Food and agriculture regulations
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are two agencies that regulate the agricultural industry. USDA and FDA compliance are often mentioned interchangeably, but each agency has unique priorities and requirements when it comes to paintings and coatings for facilities that operate within the food chain.
FDA-approved coatings are technically USDA-approved, but the reverse is not true.
Putting a food commodity in direct contact with a coating that’s not specifically FDA-approved could have serious consequences, including legal and financial ramifications.
It’s important for agricultural and food processing companies to choose an experienced painting and coating contractor like Painters USA. We understand FDA and USDA regulations and take extra precautions not to mix them up. The wrong coatings could result in financial losses due to food and ag product contamination by coatings that are not FDA-approved.
Coating Type
Epoxy is a common coating used for FDA-approved linings and USDA-approved coatings, particularly floor coating. Urethane is a great top coat for exterior structures because of chemical resistance and UV protection. It also retards mildew and is easy to clean
USDA and FDA Approval
FDA approval is required for coatings that will be in direct contact with commodities intended for human consumption. FDA-approved coatings are most commonly used as a lining for storage tanks and containers. (Note that potable water requires ANSI / NSF tested and certified coatings.)
USDA approval means the coating is suitable for use in a USDA-monitored facility. This applies mainly to wall and floor coatings formulated to withstand the extreme cleaning processes used in food and beverage facilities.
