Client and Facility Overview
Our client is a facility in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, specializing in storing and handling propane and butane gas. The facility consists of various operational structures, including two large propane and butane gas tanks.
Requested Maintenance
The client wanted a complete restoration of the two gas tanks. The goal was to mitigate the wear and tear caused by weathering and improve the appearance and durability of the tanks through an advanced coating and painting process.
Decision Driver and Timing
The primary motivation for this project was the visible deterioration of the tank surfaces due to weather exposure. The client required immediate action to ensure the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the tanks and to prevent further rust and deterioration.
Scope of Work
- Surface preparation: Power washing the tanks at 3000 PSI using a TSP (trisodium phosphate) and Simple Green solution to remove excess dirt, grit, and loose rust.
- Rust Removal: After power washing, we used a wash primer and manually removed any remaining rust.
- Structural Integrity Check: Tested and tightened all bolts and screws to ensure the tanks were secure.
- Primer Application: Applied PPG-95-245 Pitt-Gard DTR (Direct-to-Rust) Rapid Coat, a thick epoxy coating that adheres to rust, encapsulating it to prevent further spread.
- Topcoat Application: Finished with PPG-95-245 Pitthane-Ultra Gloss White, a durable and glossy topcoat resistant to chalking and deterioration, ensuring a lifespan of 13-20 years with proper care.
Notable Details
Advanced Rust Encapsulation
The use of PPG-95-245 Pitt-Gard DTR (Direct-to-Rust) Rapid Coat was critical because it not only adhered to the rust, but encapsulated it, stopping further deterioration and providing a solid surface for the final coat.
Robust Topcoat
PPG-95-245 Pitthane-Ultra Gloss White was chosen for its exceptional resistance to chalking and environmental wear. This ensures that the tanks remain vibrant and robust for over a decade, significantly extending the time before another maintenance cycle is required.
Comprehensive Cleaning Process
The two-step cleaning process, which included high pressure washing followed by wash primer and manual rust removal, ensured a meticulously clean and prepared surface. This improved the adhesion of the primer and topcoat, promoting long-term durability.
Attention to Detail
Every bolt and screw on the tanks was tested and tightened, ensuring the structural integrity of the tanks was uncompromised, reinforcing the client’s high safety standards.
Client Satisfaction
The client was very pleased with the outcome of the project and was impressed with the thoroughness and efficiency of the entire process. The refreshed tanks now stand as a testament to Painters USA's commitment to quality and attention to detail.
