Client and Facility Overview
Our client, a global frozen food company based in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Texas, has a strong presence in the food & beverage industry. The company adheres strictly to regulatory requirements and industry standards to ensure the safety and quality of its products.
Work Description
Due to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations, the customer needed specific color coding for their refrigeration piping to indicate what each pipe contains. These markings provide quick and universal identification, which is essential for safety and compliance.
Scope of Work
To meet OSHA requirements and the client's specifications, we undertook an industrial painting project involving approximately 5300 linear feet of rooftop piping. The detailed steps were as follows:
- Pre-Paint Preparation:
- Power wash at 3000 PSI: Used to clean the pipes thoroughly, removing any dirt, grease, or other contaminants.
- Light hand-grinding of all pipes: Except for ammonia pipes, we performed light hand-grinding per SSPC SP1 (Solvent Cleaning), SP2 (Hand Tool Cleaning), and SP3 (Power Tool Cleaning) standards.
- Painting Process:
- Apply 1 coat of corrosion inhibitive primer: Applied to bare and exposed substrates to prevent rust and corrosion.
- Apply 2 coats of single component moisture cured urethane top coat: Ensured a durable and long-lasting finish, specifically applied to exterior piping.
- Roller Application: We used rollers instead of sprayers due to tight spaces and to ensure an even coat in all areas.
Notable Details
Compliance with OSHA Regulations
Meeting OSHA's strict color-coding requirements for pipe contents such as liquid ammonia, gaseous ammonia, air, and natural gas ensured that the facility remained in compliance and that the safety of its employees was a priority.
Navigating Tight Spaces
The project involved some challenging, tight spaces that required the expertise of our experienced team. Despite the complexity, we were able to effectively paint all the required pipe sections without any problems.
Performance and Protection
The industrial insulating pipe coatings we use are designed to do two things: maintain the thermal integrity of the pipe (keeping heat or cold in or out as needed) and provide robust protection against environmental wear and tear.
Collaboration and Client Satisfaction
Our team worked closely with the client to ensure full compliance with their specifications and regulatory standards. The client appreciated the smooth execution, minimal disruption to their operations, and the professional quality of the finished work.
