Client and Facility Overview
Our client is a construction material manufacturing company based in Illinois. The project was conducted at one of the company's primary manufacturing facilities, which includes six large silos used to store critical raw materials.
Requested Maintenance
The primary concerns that led to this project were the noticeable rust that was developing around the bases of the silos and the deteriorating exterior paint that was beginning to chalk badly. The integrity of the silos was at risk and quick action was required to prevent further deterioration due to weather conditions.
Scope of Work
- Preparation: Removal of oil, grease, soil, loose rust, weld spatter, and other contaminants using power washing at 6,000 psi to meet SSPC-SP-1 standard.
- Cleaning: Utilized power tool cleaning to remove pack rust according to SSPC-SP-3 standard where necessary.
- Protection: Adjacent items and surfaces not to be painted were masked and tarped to prevent any splatter or overspray.
- Coating: Applied a prime coat of two-part Epoxy at 5-6 mils DFT followed by a top coat of two-part Urethane at 3 mils DFT.
- Repairs: Removed failing chime seals on all tank bottoms, both inside and out, replacing them with a polyurethane sealant.
- Cleanup: Performed daily worksite cleanup to maintain a safe and organized environment.
Notable Details
Safety Measures
All crew members were equipped with hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toed work boots and safety harnesses, and were certified as aerial lift operators. Strict adherence to safety protocols ensured a safe working environment throughout the project.
Confined Space Certification
Special attention was given to the repair and coating of the inside bottom portions of the silos, which required confined space certification due to the enclosed nature of the work area.
Protection Against Weather Elements
The coatings applied provided the silos with enhanced protection against seasonal corrosion typically caused by Illinois' wind, rain, and snow, ensuring longevity and robustness.
Client Satisfaction
The project was completed with meticulous attention to detail and adherence to the highest safety standards. The construction material manufacturing company was highly satisfied with the professionalism, quality of work, and the proactive communication maintained by Painters USA. The refurbished silos now stand resilient against further corrosion, ensuring uninterrupted operations for the client.
