Client and Facility Overview
Located in Oklahoma, this massive power plant operates a vast and critical infrastructure that includes multiple facilities such as cooling units, turbines, and control rooms. This project focused on one of the plant's massive chillers, which is an essential component of its cooling and heat exchange systems.
Requested Maintenance
The client requested a comprehensive three-year phased painting plan for the facility. Phase 1 of the plan included sandblasting to remove rust and corrosion and applying protective coatings to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the chiller.
Decision Driver and Timing
Significant corrosion and rust on the cooling unit, support structures and catwalks were the primary decision drivers for this maintenance project. Given the role of the cooling unit in the operation of the power plant, the client prioritized immediate intervention to prevent further damage and maintain operational efficiency..
Scope of Work
Phase 1: Sandblasting and Painting a Cooling Unit
- Draining the cooling unit of thousands of gallons of water
- Removing thick layers of encrusted rust using vapor-assisted sandblasting equipment
- Achieving SSPC-SP10 Near White Metal Blast Cleaning standard
- Applying a three-coat Macropoxy and Urethane system
Vapor-Assisted Sandblasting Benefits
- Uses 90% less media than traditional sandblasters, reducing waste
- Quicker cleanup time, leading to cost savings
Notable Details
No Facility Shutdown Required
By performing the work in distinct and strategically planned phases, the plant was able to continue normal operations without a complete shutdown. This was critical to maintaining uninterrupted power to their customers.
Advanced Coating Application
We applied a three-coat system of Macropoxy and Urethane to provide a tough and durable protective finish. Coatings were routinely checked for thickness to ensure top performance.
Focus on Efficiency and Cost Savings
Our choice of vapor-assisted sandblasting equipment was instrumental in reducing media usage by 90%, translating to lower project costs and faster completion times.
Client-Contractor Collaboration
This project marked the beginning of a long-term maintenance relationship. Painters USA's commitment to open communication, quality workmanship, and adherence to safety protocols fostered a positive partnership with the power plant's management team.
Client Satisfaction
The client was very pleased with Phase 1 of the project, particularly the minimal disruption to operations and the high quality, durable coatings. We look forward to continuing our phased maintenance plan and helping them maintain their critical infrastructure.
