Pretty much anyone can paint a wall, but Painters USA prides itself on tackling the most complex, challenging industrial painting and coating jobs. One of those challenges includes working in confined spaces.
Confined space training and certification prepares our crews to work safely and efficiently in any tight area with limited or difficult egress. It covers confined space classifications and entry permits, duties of each team member as they perform their work, and safety hazards and safeguards for working in an excavation area, including various trenching supports.
Importance of confined space certification
Tanks, silos, vaults, tunnels, equipment housings, ductwork, pipelines, trenches, or tight space of any kind like the nooks and crannies found in historical buildings require added safety considerations. If these kinds of structures and spaces are part of your facilities, it's important that you look for commercial / industrial painting contractors with crews that have received confined space training. With limited or difficult egress, confined spaces add hazards and complications in terms of access, effectively performing maintenance activities, and ability to conduct emergency rescue or first aid if needed. Confined spaces can have inadequate ventilation, which is why we also provide respirator fit training to our employees.
Painters USA gives you the assurance that our crews can work safely and efficiently in confined spaces, in compliance with OSHA and MSHA guidelines and regulations. And we have extensive industrial and commercial painting experience across a wide range of industry sectors, which prepares us for any situation. With confined space capabilities, we are better equipped to help plant managers hit their facility maintenance goals. We work safely and efficiently in any setting, and we do all we can to accommodate tight operational schedules.
Confined space project example
Construction material company silos
A large construction material manufacturing company in Illinois had six silos that were beginning to rust around the bases. The project included the repair and coating of the inside bottom portion of the silos, which required confined space certification. Our crew followed safety rules at all times, including wearing of hard hats, safety glasses, steel toe work boots, and safety harnesses for aerial lift operations.
Project scope and process included the following:
- Masking and tarping of adjacent items and surfaces not to be painted.
- Removal of soluble contaminants, including loose rust and weld spatter, via power washing at 6,000 psi to SSPC-SP-1 standard.
- Power tool cleaning to SSPC-SP-3 standard as needed to remove pack rust.
- Removal of failing chime seal on all tank bottoms, inside and out.
- Application of polyurethane sealant above system to the lower foot of the interior.
- Application of prime coat of two-part Epoxy at 5-6 mils DFT.
- Application of top coat of two-part Urethane at 3 mils DFT.
- Daily worksite cleanup.
All surface preparation was in accordance with coating specifications to provide coating manufacturer's warranty recommendations. Technical data and SDS sheets were provided for all products. And our confined space-certified crews were able to safely complete the project on-time and on-budget.
