Epoxy Flooring

Types of Epoxy Flooring

Whether you’re looking for durability or decoration, there are many types of epoxy floors to fit your commercial flooring needs. From moisture management to aesthetic solutions, epoxy flooring is an affordable and low-maintenance solution.

What is Epoxy Flooring?

Epoxy flooring is a specialized, two-part mixture that consists of resin and a hardener to form a hard plastic coating. It is generally applied over concrete, wood, VCT, tile, or many other common industrial and commercial floors. Epoxy flooring cures fast so your company can return to business quickly.

Types of Epoxy Floor Coatings

There are several different types of epoxy flooring, and each serves a different purpose. Epoxy flooring has many benefits, making it the perfect fit for many commercial industries—manufacturing, industrial, food processing, healthcare, and more.

Here are different kinds of epoxy floor coatings and the most common situations for each.

Self-dispersing

A self-dispersing epoxy floor coating is extremely strong. It can be mixed with quartz sand, which provides added durability. This type of epoxy flooring is generally used in high-traffic areas that are frequented by forklifts and other heavy machinery. Food and agricultural and manufacturing industries often opt for self-dispersing epoxy flooring.

Self-leveling

A great option for new or old concrete is self-leveling epoxy flooring. It creates a very smooth surface that hides cracks or imperfections. It also offers a strong and aesthetically appealing floor. Self-leveling epoxy floors are often found in office buildings, showrooms, warehouses, and manufacturing plants.

Mortar

Mortar epoxy flooring is the strongest type of epoxy flooring, and it can be used to repair cracks in existing flooring before applying another form of epoxy coating on top, such as an anti-slip coating. Areas of heavy traffic, such as production industries, warehouses, and manufacturing plants, use mortar epoxy flooring.

Graveled

For a decorative and appealing option, graveled epoxy floors offer colorful flakes that give the appearance of gravel. This can be an ideal option if you want a brand or logo on the floor.

ESD (Electrostatic Dissipating)

Static-free environments are paramount in some commercial environments. ESD epoxy flooring is a specially formulated epoxy coating that prevents the electrical charge build up and release that is common in flooring. This type of flooring can often be found in labs, hospitals, and chemical and electronic equipment manufacturing facilities.

Vapor barrier

When moisture management or zero vapor transmission is needed, a vapor barrier epoxy coating is the solution. This type of flooring is applied directly to concrete, and can help mitigate moisture before any other type of flooring is applied, such as tile, linoleum, or carpet.

Flaked

Epoxy flaked flooring is not so much a different type of epoxy flooring as it is a decorative technique. Adding colorful flakes to the resin creates an aesthetically appealing effect. This type of flooring can be found in many industries, including medical facilities, commercial kitchens, and more.

Quartz-filled

The addition of the hard mineral quartz lends extra durability in quartz-filled epoxy floors. Quartz can be used as a bonding agent, a decorative addition, or even to create an anti-slip surface. This type of epoxy flooring is often found in restrooms, schools, cafeterias, lobbies, offices, and showrooms.
